Title

Drawing of a Scene in Ancient Rome

Subject

Art in African American schools in Jacksonville

Description

A drawing of a scene set apparently in ancient Rome, by Fred O'Neale, a student at LaVilla Park School.

The drawing features a man in a toga holding a spear and another man laying beside him on a stone floor, with a building that appears to be the Pantheon in background. Given that several other pieces of artwork by students in this collection ("Charles A. Lindbergh," "Gar Wood," "Buffalo Bill," "Boots") deal with aspects of popular culture, this image may be inspired in the cinema of the era. In particular, the image might relate to the 1935 film The Last Days of Pompeii.
