Drawing of a Scene in Ancient Rome
Art in African American schools in Jacksonville
A drawing of a scene set apparently in ancient Rome, by Fred O'Neale, a student at LaVilla Park School.<br /><br />The drawing features a man in a toga holding a spear and another man laying beside him on a stone floor, with a building that appears to be the Pantheon in background. Given that several other pieces of artwork by students in this collection (<a href="https://violamuse.unfdhi.org/items/show/8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Charles A. Lindbergh,"</a> <a href="https://violamuse.unfdhi.org/items/show/9" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span>"Gar Wood,"</span></a><span> </span><a href="https://violamuse.unfdhi.org/items/show/10" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span>"Buffalo Bill,"</span></a> <a href="https://violamuse.unfdhi.org/items/show/11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Boots"</a>) deal with aspects of popular culture, this image may be inspired in the cinema of the era. In particular, the image might relate to the 1935 film <em>The Last Days of Pompeii</em>.
